SILKWOOD SCHOOL MASTER PLANNING ACTIVITIES

Planning for the future

Silkwood School is a Prep to Year 12 co-educational  school founded in 1999 and located in the leafy surrounds of Mount Nathan. The School has provided independent education and community facilities since its establishment.

To assist with future development of the School, a Master Plan has been developed which includes the following changes aimed at improving the existing education facilities for both students and staff members:

·        Additional classroom and staff buildings (primarily confined to the existing campus footprint) up to two (2) storeys in building height

·        A new three (3) multi-storey exhibition / auditorium building within the central portion of the campus

·        Internal refurbishments to existing buildings

·        Additional outdoor play spaces

·        Minimal impact to sensitive ecological areas.

The School has endeavoured to provide a balance between the built form and open space areas while also planning for the projected growth of the campus.  We note that no significant changes to our enrolment numbers are expected.

Ministerial Infrastructure Designation

To deliver on our commitment to the School community we will be requesting  that the Honourable Steven Miles MP, Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics Infrastructure endorse this Master Plan and identify our campus as a ‘Ministerial Infrastructure Designation’ (MID) under the Planning Act 2016. This designation will apply to the whole campus which will be recognised for the following purposes:

·        Education facilities;

·        Facilities at which an education and care service under the Education and Care Services National Law (Queensland) is operated.

A MID allows for the delivery of essential community infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and police/ ambulance/ fire stations. The MID process provides an alternative assessment pathway to lodging a development application with the City of Gold Coast.

If the Master Plan and MID is approved, this designation would acknowledge and reflect what the School uses this land for today and secure development of the campus in the future.

Having your say and Next Steps

We are at the early stages of the project and encourage you to review and have your say about the School’s master planning activities and proposed MID. Submissions or comments can be provided to the email mid@silkdwood.qld.edu.au.

Alternatively, if you are interested in our master planning activities and proposed MID and would like to discuss with a member of our team, please contact Greg Gapp, Business Manager at Silkwood School on (07) 5655 0300.

This early consultation period will be open for your comments until 19 August 2022.

Feedback from the pre-engagement consultation will be provided to our project team to address in the preparation of the Draft Environmental Assessment Report. This report will be prepared with input from specialist consultants and describe the anticipated environmental, social and economic impacts and an assessment of these impacts. This report will then be submitted to the Minister requesting that Silkwood School be designated for infrastructure.

Following this, formal community consultation will be undertaken later in the MID process. This will provide neighbours, key stakeholders and residents with the opportunity to make a submission or simply learn more about our master planning activities and proposed MID.
